Free Agent Outlook: 2B

Good morning! There just isn’t a lot officially happening right now, unless you consider the Phillies acquisition of closer Brad Lidge big news. Well, the Phillies were looking for a closer, so it is good for them. Also, the Astros received speedy Michael Bourn in return, and he should do a very nice job for them. In fact, I’m a bit surprised that Lidge was all it took to land Bourn.

But anyway, in the coming days, I will be posting my thoughts on this year’s free agents, and where I think they will sign, and for how many years and dollars. To give you a little taste of what to expect, I will start out today with the free agent 2B.

Geoff Blum – San Diego Padres – 1 year, $1 million

Miguel Cairo – New York Mets – 1 year, $900,000

Luis Castillo – New York Mets – 2 years, $10 million

Marcus Giles – Chicago White Sox – 1 year, $1 million

Tony Graffanino – St. Louis Cardinals – 1 year, $2 million

Tadahito Iguchi – Houston Astros – 1 year, $3.5 million, plus option

Mark Loretta – Milwaukee Brewers – 1 year, $1.25 million

Kaz Matsui – Houston Astros – 2 years, $5.8 million, plus option

Jose Valentin – Washington Nationals – 1 year, $750,000

That’s about it. There isn’t much to write home about at 2B. There are several on this list who are really utility or backup types. Castillo, Iguchi and Matsui are really the only two that I think will go to a place and get daily playing time. The Twins? Well, they already have a utility player who they say is the front-runner to be the 2B to open the season (Nick Punto) and two guys at AAA who are either ready or near-ready. There is no reason for them to expend any money on second base.
