Tuesday Night Update

Earlier on Tuesday, there was a posting with several updates, trying to get caught up on several things going on in baseball. This is kind of the format that I am leaning toward throughout the offseason. Daily updates (more or less frequent, as appropriate) with hopefully weekly or more frequent larger postings on a specific topic. For now, I think that it primarily is about free agent eligibles making the decision to file for free agency. Their current teams can negotiate with those players exclusively for the next couple of weeks. A few guys will stay with their old team. In fact, many of them will. However, most will at least go through the free agent process. So I don’t expect a lot to happen in the next couple of weeks. However, if anything major or minor does happen, it’s likely that I will have an opinion. So, be sure to check back, and I would really appreciate your thoughts on what you’re seeing here and what you would like different, and especially ideas for future stories. Of course, I also would be welcome to posting articles from you, from guest writers. So, if you’re interested in submitting something, please let me know and I will be happy to post. Let’s get to a couple of thoughts before you check out the updated NFL “Expert” Pick panels Week 8 results and overall standings.

·         Rondell White filed for free agency. It is still likely that he will retire, but this is still just an important formality for him to go through.

·         Joe Girardi officially accepted the Yankees manager job. No surprise there. People are concerned somewhat about how he will handle the Yankees’ plethora of young pitchers after most of the Marlins young pitchers fought arm injuries in 2006. It is certainly something worth watching.

·         One name that I forgot about when talking about Yankees pitching prospects is Humberto Sanchez. No, he’s not at the level of Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy or Joba Chamberlain, but he could be a solid #3 or #4 type of pitcher. Remember Sanchez came to the Yankees after the 2006 season from the Tigers as part of the Gary Sheffield deal.

·         Grady Little resigned as the Dodgers manager last night. It has been rumored that the two sides have been talking buy-out for the last few days. Clearly the Dodgers are about to offer Joe Torre their manager job. If he takes it, Don Mattingly will likely retain his role as bench coach for Torre. Did you know that Mattingly’s son Preston was a supplemental first round pick just a couple of years ago… for the Dodgers? If Torre takes a three year deal and then retires, it is very possible that Mattingly would be his successor for the Dodgers and have the opportunity to manage his son.

·         Baseball Guru at the STrib (note sarcasm) Patrick Reusse suggests that the Twins make a deal with the Yankees. He suggests the Twins send both Johan Santana and Joe Nathan to the Bronx in exchange for Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera, Jose Tabata and Joba Chamberlain. If the Yankees would actually even give that a second glance, the Twins would be absolutely crazy not to sign on the dotted line instantly (if trades are finalized with signing).

·         Halloween… seriously, is there a dumber “Holiday” in the world? It is dumb on so many levels. First, it gives people an excuse to make a fool of themselves. Secondly, it is a “holiday” celebrating evil. Is there something just wrong about that? And isn’t there something just wrong about making a ‘holiday’ built around evil such an “important” thing for kids? I just don’t get it. Maybe I’m the Halloween Grinch, but oh well. It’s dumb!

·         Michael Jackson once asked, “Who’s Bad?” Who is the bigger Bad Guy? Alex Rodriguez or Kobe Bryant… and why? Where does Barry Bonds fit into this? Which one has a record? Which one has requested being traded? Which one has done something that is outside his contract?

·         And finally, Josh Taylor, Wes Holtsclaw and Joe Benson are the winners for Week 8, each going 11-2. For Josh Taylor, it was timely as he now grabs the overall lead as we approach the midway point of the season.
