Thursday Game Notes

The Twins had a day off at home on Thursday, probably something they really needed. Tonight, Carlos Silva returns to the Metrodome and will get to face a calmed Francisco Liriano. It should be a fun game to watch. But the six minor league affiliates all played, and here are the game notes from each. Also, LaVelle posted several Minor League notes on his blog.
Thursday was a busy night here on the site as I posted several blog entries. Here is the update:
Obviously it is a big day for the 2008 draft class. August 15th is the last day that teams can sign their 2008 picks without losing them. That is why the Twins signed two guys Thursday night. It will be interesting to see if they sign any others.

ROCHESTER REPORT
Thursday
– Rochester 7, Buffalo 4 – Anthony
Swarzak had another good start to improve to 3-0. In five innings, he gave
up a run on four hits. He walked four and struck out just two. Ricky Barrett
gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in his inning. Julio DePaula
gave up a run on three hits in his inning. Carmen Cali threw a shutout
inning before Bobby Korecky threw a shutout inning for his 22nd save.
Garrett Jones continues to hit well. he went 4-5 with his third triple and
18th home run. Jason Pridie went 2-3 with a walk. Matt Macri was
2-5 and hit his eight homer (3rd in two games). Alejandro Machado was 1-3
with two walks and his sixth stolen base. Bobby Kielty played in his
first game and went 1-5 while playing LF. Luke Hughes was 0-4 with four
strikeouts.
NEW BRITAIN NEWS
Thursday
– New
Britain 11, Erie 4 – The Rockcat bats helped Ryan
Mullins improve to 8-9 on the year. The lanky lefty gave up three runs on
ten hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out seven. Frank Mata gave
up a run in the 7th. Zach Ward and Ben Julianel each threw a
scoreless inning. Steve Tolleson had another good game. He went 2-5 with
his eighth home and three RBI. Danny Valencia went 2-4 with a walk and
his 15th double. Toby Gardenhire went 2-4 with a walk and his first
triple. David Winfree went 2-4 with his 25th double. Joe Gaetti
got one at bat, and he hit his first home run.
FT MYERS MEMOS
Thursday –
Miracle 6, Lakeland 5 – In LaVelle's blog last night, he commented
that Danny Santiesteban is now a pitcher (who throws 88-92 with a good
slider). Well, in this game, he played CF and went 2-4 with his sixth homer.
Danny Berg and Yancarlos Ortiz each went 2-4. Wilson Ramos hit
a grand slam, his 13th homer of the year. Alex Burnett started and gave
up five runs on seven this in five innings. He struck out six. Carlos
Gutierrez threw two shutout innings to improve to 3-1. Oswaldo Sosa
struck out two in a perfect inning. Anthony Slama recorded his 24th save
with a one-hit inning.

Beloit 6, Quad Cities 1 – Steve Hirschfeld threw another
excellent game to improve to 9-4 on the season. He gave up only an unearned run
on five hits in seven innings. He walked none and struck out three. Chris
Anderson and Danny Hernandez each threw a shutout frame. Ben
Revere had his second straight good game. He went 2-3 with a walk and two
more stolen bases to give him 43 on the year. Andy Schmiesing and
Chris Cates each went 2-4.
ELIZABETHTON EXTRAS
Thursday – E-Twins 6, Danville 5 – Dan Osterbrook continues to impress. He improved to 6-2 with 6.1 innings of two run ball. He gave up four runs (3 earned) on eight hits. True to form, he walked just one and struck out ten. (That gives him eight walks and 90 strikeouts in just 65.2 innings) Steve Blevins gave up a run on a hit and two walks in 1.1 innings. Mark Hamburger got the final four outs for his 12th save. He gave up three hits, but no runs and struck out two. Jon Waltenbury went 2-4 with his 19th double. Evan Bigley was 2-4 with his 11th double. Angel Morales knocked his 12th home run of the year.
GCL TWINS TALK
Thursday

GCL Twins 7, GCL Orioles 6 (10 Innings) –
Reggie Williams went 2-5. One
of his hits was a single to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning. He was
sacrificed to second. Two consecutive wild pitches and the GCL Twins had the
win. Michael Gonzalez went 3-3 with his ninth and tenth doubles.
Anderson Hidalgo was 1-2 with two walks and his first stolen base. Jean
Mijares started and went five innings. He gave up four runs on five hits and
three walks. He struck out three. Mike Tonkin gave up two runs on three
hits in three innings. He struck out three. Kelvin Mota improved to 2-0
with two shutout innings in which he struck out three.
