Breaking News
I just got a bit of information that is really quite disturbing to me. Throughout the offseason and during spring training, I have been touting Twins pitching prospect Anthony Swarzak as one of my choices for a big breakout 2007 season. (I ranked him as the Twins 4th best prospect this spring) Well, if nothing else his 2007 will be newsworthy... and shortened. This afternoon, we found out that Swarzak was suspended for 50 games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. It is being described as a "drug of abuse" violation which means that it is not 'performance enhancing' but instead, something that I would probably worry more about.
Obviously I don't know anything
more than what the article tells us. Swarzak was off to a very slow
start for AA New Britain, with an 11.12 ERA in just 5.2 innings. He has
good stuff and could still be very good. Hopefully this is a jarring
experience for the still-21 year old and something that will end any
future drug problems with him. You just hate to see this.
Update - LaVelle just posted this as well. John Sickels' site, in a diary, it was actually posted earlier this evening.
