Disappointing!
If you read the posting that Aaron
Gleeman tells us that La
Velle E. Neal posted at 2:30 a.m., LEN3 expresses
his great disappointment with the Winter Meetings. I can’t blame him. He put in
crazy hours and listened to some crazy rumors (some real, some manufactured).
He did a great job of keeping us updated, and yet, for what? I can understand
his frustration. I have been updating mlbtraderumors.com about every fifteen minutes
since Monday night (and every ½ hour before that), just waiting for new
information. I went to LaVelle’s blog this morning and
wrote this:
I’m
honestly tired of thinking about the Johan trade possibilities, and it really
isn’t worth thinking of possible/potential lineups at this point. I truly believe
that we have all exhausted every possibility. Unless there is something way out
there, I just don’t think I’m going to really comment on a Johan trade until
there is an actual trade, or until La Velle tells us
that something is truly imminent. It’s exhausting. I’ve been disappointed this
week. Does that just mean I am too close to this? Probably.

I'm
tired of thinking about <Phil Hughes, Melky
Cabrera, Austin Jackson, Jose Tabata, Ian Kennedy,
Clay Buccholz, Jacoby Ellsbury,
Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, Justin Masterson, Ryan Kalish, Lars Anderson, Michael Bowden, Jered
Weaver, Brandon Wood, Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana,
Reggie Willits, Erick Aybar, Matt Kemp, Delwyn Young, Chad Billingsley, Jonathan Broxton, Andy LaRoche, Clayton Kershaw, Adam Jones, Jeff Clement, Brandon
Morrow, Jose Reyes, Carlos Gomes, Phil Humber, Mike Pelfrey,
and however many more names have been mentioned in the sweepstakes. Does anyone
else feel the need to tout the merits of Ellsbury or
bash the play of Crisp? I'm tired of reading that Reyes isn't available. Phil Hughes or Clay Buccholz?
Don't others feel that they've just had enough?
It has been an exhausting few days for the Twins fans and
bloggers. Wanting to be made aware of any new information.
Do they have to trade Santana? Of course not. Should
they? Of course. Are our expectations a little high? Maybe. Should they be? I think so. But in the end, the Twins
will be better in 2009 and beyond if they do trade Santana. Unless they can
work out a reasonable deal with the ace lefty, which I don’t see being a
possibility, the best move is to move him. But at this point, I think I’m done
speculating about teams and players that might be interested. This thing could
happen any time… or it could happen right before spring training in February…
or any time in between. I think we are all best to just take a deep breath, let
Bill Smith and his entourage do their best to try to take the time to make the
best possible deal. As frustrating as it is for us, if this taking a little
longer means a better deal for the Twins, Smith is wise to do it. Sure, it
would have been nice to have it done so that the Twins (and us fans) could
start thinking about actual baseball. But Smith’s job isn’t to work on our
schedule and to make us happy. His job is to build a better baseball team, and
obviously that is what he is trying to do here.
So, I will just be patient, and trust that the people in charge
are looking out for the Twins best interests, and that is a good thing. But for
now, I have heard all the speculation that I can (unless something new is
presented, then I’ll be back in the game.) Otherwise, let’s all try to get back
to normal. Listen to the Rule V draft this morning, discuss who the Twins pick
or lose during the major league and minor league portions. I will be on the
road by 9:00 this morning so keep the comments going. Also, the football picks
should be here shortly.
